MY GARDENING YEAR
Tuesday, 08 July 2008

Murdoch Books

There are many things that I know nothing about, gardening is one of them. I try, but somehow nearly everything I plant dies. I try to explain to my plants that they will just have to fend for themselves, that we’re both very busy people and can’t they please just flourish without us, but not surprisingly that approach hasn’t worked too well.  All of which helps explain why this book is so great for people like me.

In nice simple language (with beautiful inspiring photographs to boot) My Gardening Year tells you exactly what you need to do to make your garden flourish. Do you want to know what types of plants will flower around Christmas so you’ll have a garden full of flowers for when the family visit, this book will tell you.  And best of all this book is organized on a month by month basis so you actually have some idea of what needs doing this month. I haven’t had this book long enough to actually know whether or not it will save my rather endangered garden, but I’m sure it will help. In fact, I like this book so much I’m thinking of giving my mum a copy too!

The Prez Report
Tuesday, 08 July 2008

valve01by Dr HAM

Hi Everyone!

Hello from a re-invigorated ANZAPT
Thank you to Alex for holding the fort for the past 12 months.  He is now going to concentrate on the RRC while ANZAPT continues its role as a strong voice for trainees, external to the College.

As you can imagine, the next 12 months will see ANZPAT and RRC further clarifying their advocacy roles and relationships, but we anticipate working together in a co-operative manner with the common goal of improving training conditions for us all.

There seems to be a mistaken perception that RRC and ANZAPT are somehow rivals, and cannot be mentioned in the same breath.  Not true!

SUMITRA’S TIPS TO PASS THE CLINICALS: The 12 (+3) step program
Tuesday, 08 July 2008
valve02Step 1: Stop procrastinating!!!  If you have all the basic training requirements out of the way, then commit yourself.  You are never going to be more ready by waiting.

Step 2: Go over the college forms with a fine tooth comb and send in all the relevant bits, by courier or registered post.  Get a good photo of yourself taken – this is the first thing the examiners will see, and their first impression may put you in an adverse position.

Step 3: At least 4 months out, make a plan for yourself.  This should include a timetable of study, with appropriate breaks and time blocked out for essential activities (mental health days absolutely allowed).  Be realistic so that you aren’t having to make a new timetable every week, and feel bad about yourself in the process.

BOOK REVIEW – COMA ALEX GARLAND (Riverhead Books, NY 2004)
Tuesday, 08 July 2008
bookIf you like suspending such paltry things as time and reality, well then this is the book for you.  Visually pleasing – a mere 90 pages, interspersed with woodcuts by Mr. Garland’s father Nick Garland.  Their dark brooding intensity is matched by the tones of the book.  A simple premise – a man in a coma trying to piece together his memory of the events that led him to be in this state.  The narrative, weaving in and out in tandem with the protagonist’s consciousness, does a lot more than that though.   In piecing together his story, much more comes to light about his life, and the meaning that he makes of it.

Books to help with the Psychotherapy Long Case
Tuesday, 08 July 2008
valve04I had originally intended to write a summary of all the books that I found useful for preparing for and undertaking my long case but I’ve realised I’ll never get anything else done if I do, so I’ve included below reviews of my two favourite Psychodynamic textbooks.
