Hi Everyone!
Hello from a re-invigorated ANZAPT
Thank you to Alex for holding the fort for the past 12 months. He is now going to concentrate on the RRC while ANZAPT continues its role as a strong voice for trainees, external to the College.
As you can imagine, the next 12 months will see ANZPAT and RRC further clarifying their advocacy roles and relationships, but we anticipate working together in a co-operative manner with the common goal of improving training conditions for us all.
There seems to be a mistaken perception that RRC and ANZAPT are somehow rivals, and cannot be mentioned in the same breath. Not true!

Step 1: Stop procrastinating!!! If you have all the basic training requirements out of the way, then commit yourself. You are never going to be more ready by waiting.
Step 2: Go over the college forms with a fine tooth comb and send in all the relevant bits, by courier or registered post. Get a good photo of yourself taken – this is the first thing the examiners will see, and their first impression may put you in an adverse position.
Step 3: At least 4 months out, make a plan for yourself. This should include a timetable of study, with appropriate breaks and time blocked out for essential activities (mental health days absolutely allowed). Be realistic so that you aren’t having to make a new timetable every week, and feel bad about yourself in the process.

If you like suspending such paltry things as time and reality, well then this is the book for you. Visually pleasing – a mere 90 pages, interspersed with woodcuts by Mr. Garland’s father Nick Garland. Their dark brooding intensity is matched by the tones of the book. A simple premise – a man in a coma trying to piece together his memory of the events that led him to be in this state. The narrative, weaving in and out in tandem with the protagonist’s consciousness, does a lot more than that though. In piecing together his story, much more comes to light about his life, and the meaning that he makes of it.

I had originally intended to write a summary of all the books that I found useful for preparing for and undertaking my long case but I’ve realised I’ll never get anything else done if I do, so I’ve included below reviews of my two favourite Psychodynamic textbooks.

C&A AT and pursuing research have not frequently been associated. But I am lucky enough to be able to be part of a research project in my final year of AT. I am working for the University of Tasmania, on a project headed by Prof Ken Kirkby, with a team of 4 other researchers.
I am not a terribly scientific individual, yet I really wanted to have another look at how we can implement change in the community other than by individual clinical work with young people and families who already have mental health problems. As we are all aware, we put a lot of work and money into treating the illness end of mental health but precious little into preventative health projects. So when this opportunity came along I thought it was a great way to start learning about research and also to get a feeling for how early intervention programs might work, or not work as the case may be!

Strange things can happen the day before the clinical exam. Procrastination can take many forms...
This is best sung to the tune of your favourite nursery rhyme - and at least it is something to do during that inactive bye.

Australasian Psychiatry seeks trainees to join the pool of peer reviewers!
Australasian Psychiatry (AP)
is a peer-reviewed journal and, by definition, reliant on peer
reviewers. Due to an increase in the number of submissions and, from
2007, frequency of publication (from quarterly to bimonthly), the
Editor, Professor Garry Walter, is seeking to expand the reviewer pool.
By reviewing submitted papers, Fellows and trainees can help to shape
AP and improve those articles that are eventually published. The time
spent in reviewing papers may also be claimed as part of the CPD
Program. Finally, reviewers receive a 30% discount voucher, valid for any book published by Informa Healthcare.
If you would like to review papers, Garry would like to know! Simply send a brief email to Joshua Pitt from the publisher
This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
indicating
your willingness to be added to our reviewer database, and particular
areas of interest or expertise. It is anticipated that you may be asked
to review 1-2 papers per year.
